The Welcome Mat

One day a leaflet was dropped on our doorstep. A small group of neighborhood parents was asking for help in developing a local school into the best educational environment possible. I answered the call, much to my husband's bewilderment. Why would you do this and what are you planning on doing? We don't even have kids. Why do you care?

I didn't know, but I went to a few parent-teacher meetings to seek answers to those questions. I helped plant a school garden, I tutored a couple of first-graders in reading and then I felt the heat of a light bulb over my head: The Shakespeare Club.

The principal gave me the go-ahead once she heard it would be free to the school and the children. A few years have passed...and I'm in big-time.

Welcome to our stories. I'll begin with Year Four and "Twelfth Night."

  6. Having witnessed a couple of years of development and seeing the lights in so many eyes of Shakespeare Club members, I believe this program affects students in the most positive of ways.
